List Maker

List Maker works by examining the data on your clipboard and replacing it with the same data but processed into a more useful format. It is particularly useful for highlighting and copying a column of ID numbers in the results of a SQL query and converting it for use in the IN clause of another SQL query. The data on the clipboard is only replaced by clicking the "OK" button. Any other action leaves the clipboard unchanged.

When List Maker is launched and whenever the "OK" or "Cancel" buttons are pressed, it will minimize itself to the system tray. Right click on the system tray icon and choose "Exit" from the menu to shut down List Maker. Also available on the menu is "Options" dialog where you can change the behavior of List Maker.

List Maker will automatically check for updates when the program is launched.

Main Window

Presets

The presets area contains a list of presets for quick access. By clicking the preset, the saved settings for the preset are loaded into the main window. Currently there are two built-in presets: "SQL IN (numeric)" and "SQL IN (text)". The first (numeric) is used when converting a list of numbers into a comma-separated string for use in a SQL IN clause. The second is the same but wraps each value in a single quote so it can be used for text fields.

Right clicking on the presets area brings up a popup menu with following options:

  1. Save as preset...
Allows you to save the current settings to a new preset. A dialog box will appear asking you to name the new preset.
  2. Rename...
Allows you to rename the currently selected preset. If you do not have a preset selected, this option will be unavailable.
  3. Delete
Allows you to delete the currently selected preset. If you do not have a preset selected, this option will be unavailable.

Input Options

The settings in the input options area determine how the input data is parsed. Currently there is only one setting in this area.

  1. Split On: This option defines what separates the individual items in the input.
    • NewLine: Each line in the input will become an item in the output.
    • WhiteSpace: Any whitespace (tabs, spaces, newlines, etc.) will create a new item in the output.
    • Comma: Any comma encountered will create a new item in the output.
    • Tab: Any tab encountered will create a new item in the output.

Output Options

The settings in the output options area determine how the output is to be constructed after the input has been parsed into individual items.

  1. Prefix: This string is added to the beginning of each item before it is output.
  2. Postfix: This string is added to the end of each item before it is output.
  3. Separator: This string is added between each of the items.
  4. Trim Whitespace: If checked, all whitespace will be stripped from the beginning and end of each item before it is output.
  5. Remove NULL: If checked, all items which are equal to the string "NULL" will be removed and not included in the output.
  6. Single Line: If checked, the output will be on a single line. If not checked, each item will be output on its own line.

Input and Output Preview

The Input area shows the data currently on the clipboard and is what List Maker will be parsing. The Output Preview area simply shows a preview of what the output will look like based on your current settings.

Options Window

This window is accessed by right clicking on the system tray icon and choosing "Options..." from the popup menu. Press "OK" to save your changes or "Cancel" to leave the options window without saving changes.

Current Keyboard Shortcut

This box displays the currently configured keyboard shortcut. It will be blank if there is not one currently configured.

Assign New Keyboard Shortcut

This box allows you to assign a new keyboard shortcut which will activate List Maker any time it is pressed. The recommended shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+L, though you are free to choose any combination you wish.

To choose a shortcut, be sure the cursor is in the box and press the combination you have chosen. To clear the shortcut entirely, you may press the Delete key.

If the shortcut you've chosen is already taken, you will be notified that it is unavailable.

Run List Maker at Windows Startup

If this box is checked, List Maker will be launched whenever Windows starts. This helps insure that List Maker is always available when you need it.
